"Rapid Inundation Modelling using a GPU Solver of the Full 2D Long Wave Equations"

The use of Graphical Processing Units (GPU or graphics cards), which effectively offer hundreds of parallelized cores, provides the opportunity to significantly reduce the run times of 2D models. A number of parallelised 2D solvers are emerging; however, many use simplified versions of the 2D hydrodynamic equations. The simplifications can reduce the model's accuracy, especially in deep water or low Manning's n, where the bed resistance term is less dominant. A 2D GPU solver has been developed for the XP-2D software that solves the full 2D equations, that is it includes inertia and sub-grid scale turbulence (eddy viscosity). . This exciting new capability is now being used for whole of catchment modelling, tsunami inundation, 2D flood forecasting models and high resolution, fine scale, fully 2D solutions. Examples of benchmark tests, flume models and real-world applications are presented.
He is involved in numerical modelling projects in the flooding and coastal areas. These include flood studies, floodplain management studies, flood impact assessments, storm tide studies, Monte Carlo analysis, wave modelling, coastal hydrodynamic and advection-dispersion modelling.
