Fuji FinePix REAL 3D W1

The Fuji FinePix ReAL 3D W1 is the first consumer targeted 3D stereoscopic camera. Currently, the camera is only available in Japan, but will soon be available in other regions.

The camera operates by capturing two images with 2 independent, 10MP camera lenses, then merges them together in a new format called a Multi-Picture Object, or MPO. The 3D images and videos (recorded at 640 x 480) can then be played back on either a Fuji FinePix REAL 3D V1 display, or by using a computer equiped with Nvidia's 3D Vision (and necessary hardware). MPO format was created for initial use with this camera, the support is still developing. Unlike Nvidia's 3D Vision, the V1 display frame does not require glasses to view, like the display window on the camera' to 'similar to the 3D display on the camera.

Users can set a number of functions, including focal distance between the lenses which can have different effects on the 3D appearance. The camera can also operate in different 2D modes, including taking simultaneous shots from each lens, or operating like a standard 10MP digital camera. For 2D modes, JPEG images are recorded.

3D stereoscopic technology is quickly gaining popularity in the general consumer market, with new media and media interfacing devices, like 3D TVs, launching at an increasing rate. And though at this time, the camera appears to be strictly for entertainment, but as support for the formats in not only display-methods but software improve, the camera can become more usable for practical purpose.
