Vol.5 The 20th ITS World Congress Tokyo 2013 Preview

Focus on Automated Vehicle Control, Environmental and Disaster Control
Covering the Past, Present, and Future of ITS as well as ITS in Asia
Congress Registration to Start on April 1

The 20th ITS World Congress Tokyo 2013 will be held in six months. While participation registration for the congress starts online (http://www.itsworldcongress.jp/japanese/index.html) on April 1, the specific framework of the congress, for which it is the third time to be held in Japan since it was held in Yokohama (1995) and Nagoya (2004), is gradually becoming clear.

ITS World Congress provides an opportunity to exchange information from wide-ranging points of view such as technology development, policies, and market trends relating to ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems), aiming to promote dissemination of ITS, solutions for traffic problems as well as creation of business chances. ITS organizations representing the Americas: ITS America, Europe: ERTICO, Asia-Pacific region: ITS Asia Pacific) cooperate with each other (trilateral cooperation). The congress is held in these regions by turn every year.

"It is held in Asia once in three years. We would like to invite many people from rising nations in Asia in order to increase the appeal that coming here help visitors to know about ITS in Asia, not to mention publicizing Tokyo (as a host). We hope this will attract a large number of participants from Europe and America." Mr. Takaaki Segi, Secretariat of the Japan Organizing Committee of ITS World Congress Tokyo 2013 stated the position of the congress as this. At the same time, embarking on the 20th anniversary of the congress, they are examining easy-to-understand ways of providing information in cooperation with ITS Japan so that a wide range of people may understand "The Past, Present, and Future of ITS".

Congress Outline and Events to Be Gradually Specified

ITS World Congress Tokyo 2013 will start with the opening ceremony at Tokyo International Forum on October 14. Sessions (about 250 sessions) and exhibitions (about 700 booths assumed) etc. will be operated at Tokyo Big Site from October 15 to 18. During the congress period, more than 8,000 people from over 60 countries are expected (the number of registrants are about 4,000).

The congress concept of ITS World Congress Tokyo 2013 is "Open ITS to the Next". In addition to its conventional domain "Safety and traffic management (solution for problems such as traffic accidents and congestion)", ITS is reaching out to three new domains: "Cooperation with the field of energy management through the emergence of electrified vehicles etc", "Personalized mobility services navigated by big data (creation of new business opportunities in the network society)", and "Realizing resilient transport systems by taking advantage of lessens from the Great East Japan Earthquake". This conveys the intention that ITS is expanding into the new stage for shaping next generation mobility.

Based on this, the congress focuses on the following seven topics.
  1. Safety and traffic management
  2. Next generation mobility and sustainability
  3. Efficient transport systems in mega cities/regions
  4. Intermodal and multimodal systems for people and goods
  5. Personalized mobility services
  6. Resilient transport systems for emergency situations
  7. Institutional issues and international harmonization.

In particular, its policy is confirmed that discussion is deepened on three common issues,
  1. Automated vehicle control,
  2. Measurement of CO2 reduction effect,
  3. Disaster control,
within the trilateral cooperation mentioned before.

Based on these elements, distinctive plans are being prepared for the congress such as commemorative events for the 20th anniversary to send out the message "the Past, Present, and Future of ITS" (Tokyo Big Site Atrium), showcase demonstrations including automated vehicle control and the next generation cooperative system, technical visits (paid visits to be carried out during the congress period), and post-congress tours (paid visit to be carried out after the congress period). Mr. Takaaki Segi adds that it should be a very good opportunity for networking since academy, industry, and government key persons inside and outside of the country including rising nations in Asia gather together in one place.

The annual meeting of ITS America will be held in the end of April; meeting of the ITS World Congress board members in Detroit, U.S.A., where next ITS World Congress is to be held, in May; and annual meetings of ERTICO and ITS Japan in June, respectively. That is, this period provides a final opportunity to directly publicize ITS World Congress Tokyo 2013 to those related with ITS inside and outside the country.

On the other hand, the provisional edition of the formal congress program will be formulated in the beginning of June. More concrete contents are going to be announced toward the annual meeting of ITS Japan. Then it will take three months' preparation for the congress to open finally.

FORUM8: Using DS and VR-Cloud for Understanding ITS

FORUM8 participated in the 11th ITS World Congress held in Nagoya in 2004 for the first time. It will be the 10th time in a row at "the 20th ITS World Congress Tokyo 2013" that it participates in the congress.

Through these years, FORUM8 introduced in the congress UC-win/Road multi display system (4PDP) based on three-dimensional real-time VR software as a start at the exhibition in 2004, followed by the latest versions of UC-win/Road and UC-win/Road drive simulator (DS), a variety of systems and plug ins, and related services. Each time the company has attracted high attention of people involved in ITS not only in Japan but also in world cities.

This time, when ITS World Congress is held in Tokyo for the first time, FORUM8 is going to exhibit several kinds of DS equipped with the latest version of UC-win/Road (Ver.9) and VR-Cloud(R).

Among them, UC-win/Road Ver.9 meets the needs for careful representation of diverse driving situations and simulation. Along with extending the scenario function, the micro simulation player and the cluster system, it added an automated vehicle control function. The functions, which are needed for research and development in relation with ITS, are still more enriched.

Regarding VR-Cloud(R), FORUM8 plans to run UC-win/Road on the cloud server and have many visitors experience the navigation system by using the function of operating 3D VR with the Web browser.
